The Best Beach Bars in Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands

best beach bars jost van dyke british virgin islands

Tucked away in the stunning British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke is often overlooked by many Caribbean travellers, but it’s truly a hidden gem. While most people only know it for White Bay and the famous Soggy Dollar Bar, this island has so much more to offer. Despite having only around 300 residents, Jost Van Dyke boasts more bars and restaurants than towns ten times its size in the States! Each spot on the island brings something special, and though I can’t pick just one favourite, I can say they’re all worth a visit on your next trip to JVD.

1. Soggy Dollar Bar

Let’s kick things off with the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar—it’s not just famous from Below Deck, but also featured in numerous publications. This iconic spot is where the famous Painkiller cocktail was born in the 1970s. The drink is a perfect blend of premium dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple, and orange juice (the proportions are a well-guarded secret), all topped off with freshly grated Grenadian nutmeg.

One of the coolest things about Soggy Dollar is the live webcam right in front of the bar. You can let your friends and family back home tune in and watch you enjoying yourself in paradise! The bar serves up plenty of other delicious cocktails and has a great food menu, too. They even open for breakfast, which was fantastic when we visited—especially since there aren’t many breakfast options on White Bay.

If you’re planning a visit, I highly recommend coming early. You’ll get to enjoy the stunning White Bay before it gets crowded with yachts and excursion boats, which usually start arriving around lunchtime. Plus, don’t forget to check out the boutique inside the bar for Soggy Dollar-themed souvenirs like T-shirts and caps.

2. Foxy’s

Located on Great Harbour, Foxy’s is just a quick drive from the ferry port or a short boat ride from White Bay. This iconic spot is the place to be in the evenings, and its New Year’s Eve party is legendary, rivaling celebrations around the globe—I’m definitely itching to experience it one year!

The bar is decked out in T-shirts, license plates, and memorabilia from all over the world, making it a fun challenge to spot something from your own corner of the globe. With delicious cocktails and a menu to match, Foxy’s is absolutely worth a visit.

Don’t forget to swing by their boutique store for some last-minute souvenirs. Foxy’s also has a sister property on the other side of the island near the Bubbly Pool, offering a stunning waterfront location. It’s a bit further to get to, but trust me, it’s well worth the trip!

3. Ivan’s Stress-Free Bar

Situated on the quieter side of White Bay, separated by a rocky outcrop, Ivan’s Stress-Free Bar perfectly embodies its name—this place is all about pure relaxation. The atmosphere is serene and peaceful, giving you a chance to enjoy White Bay’s stunning white sand beaches and some of the bluest waters you’ll ever see, all without the crowds.

I honestly can’t figure out why Ivan’s isn’t more popular, but hey, the more of a secret it stays, the fewer crowds for my next visit! When we were there, we even spotted a floating spa not far from Ivan’s shores—you can call to book an appointment or swim out for a massage while floating over the water.

The bar has a solid menu of tasty options, and they offer a BBQ buffet once a week that’s not to be missed. If you’re looking to stay a bit longer, Ivan’s also has cabanas and rooms for rent at affordable rates in an unbeatable location.

4. Tipsy Shark

Located on Great Harbour, Tipsy’s is a small yet cozy bar and restaurant that’s definitely worth a visit during your stay. They serve up some of the best cocktails around, paired with a delicious food menu. The service is quick, so you won’t have to wait long to enjoy your meal.

You can choose to dine inside the restaurant, perch on a barstool and watch the world go by, or grab a seat right by the water’s edge. It’s just a short two-minute drive from the ferry port and a little further up the road from Foxy’s. With only a couple of roads on the island, it’s easy to find, or just ask one of the friendly locals if you need directions.

5. Hendo’s Hideout

Located on White Bay, Hendo’s Hideout should definitely be on your list during your stay. The bar offers an extensive cocktail menu, and the food is just as impressive. You can’t miss it—just look for the bright orange loungers and deck chairs out front, a clear contrast to the blue ones next door at Soggy Dollar.

Hendo’s also features a fantastic boutique store on the property, offering more than just souvenirs. You’ll find beach-inspired brands and stylish items, all in a cool, air-conditioned space—perfect for escaping the heat. If you plan to have dinner here, be sure to make a reservation in advance.

6. Gertrude’s

Where else do you get to pour your own drinks? At Gertrude’s, Olga hands you the supplies—rum, peach schnapps, fruit juice, and nutmeg—and lets you play bartender to craft your own rum punch! Located right next to Soggy Dollar on White Bay, it’s usually a bit quieter than its famous neighbour, but don’t worry—when you’re in charge of the drink-making, it’s always a good time! And don’t forget to snap a photo by the giant green deck chair out front!

7. Coco Loco’s

Located at the far end of White Bay, Coco Loco’s is a hidden gem worth discovering. This rustic bar offers a more secluded spot on the beach, perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds. They serve up delicious cocktails and a tasty food menu. Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing drink or a satisfying meal, Coco Loco’s is a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy the laid-back vibe.
