Los Cauquenes is the only five-star luxury resort on the shores of the Beagle Channel in Ushuaia, Argentina, located at the southernmost tip of the world—often called “the end of the world.” Surrounded by stunning views of the Beagle Channel and snow-capped mountains, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and take in the beauty of this remote destination. Whether you’re relaxing in the spa, exploring the breathtaking surroundings, or enjoying delicious meals with incredible views, Los Cauquenes offers a truly unique experience in one of the most beautiful and far-flung places on Earth.
Location and How to Get There
Located in Ushuaia, proudly known as the “End of the World,” Los Cauquenes does require a bit of a trek to get there—but the journey is half the fun! Situated at the southernmost point of South America, Ushuaia is a quaint town and often serves as the port of embarkation for excursions to Antarctica.
To get there, you’ll need to fly into Ushuaia’s airport (flight code USH). Several local airlines operate flights to this destination. I chose Fly Bondi from Buenos Aires because the flight times aligned best with my schedule, but you could also consider options like Aerolíneas Argentinas or JetSMART. Fly Bondi is a budget airline, so be prepared to pay extra for snacks, carry-on bags, seat selection, etc. However, if you go in with these expectations, you’ll be fine! I actually had a very pleasant flight with them and would happily fly with them again.

If you’re flying into Buenos Aires, keep in mind that the city has two major airports—Ezeiza (EZE) and Aeroparque (AEP)—which are on opposite sides of the city and quite far apart. If you need to transfer between them, make sure you have plenty of time, as traffic can be unpredictable. I chose to overnight near EZE airport after my long overnight flight from the United States to rest and recover.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn EZE Airport and was thoroughly impressed. They allowed me to check in at 10 a.m., and the hotel had two restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, a spa, and even a hairdresser. Plus, they offer a free shuttle service from the airport! For a Holiday Inn, it truly exceeded my expectations.
Once you arrive at Ushuaia Airport, the hotel is just a quick 10-minute drive away, making it super convenient.
Check-in Process
If you book directly with the hotel, return airport transfers are included in your booking—a welcome relief as it’s one less thing to organise! When we landed in Ushuaia, we were met by our polite driver, Manuel, who took us on the short 10-minute drive to the hotel.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff, who handled our bags and offered us a delicious hot chocolate as a welcome drink. After filling out the necessary paperwork, we were handed two complimentary breakfast tokens—a thoughtful touch, as it was 10 a.m., and check-in wasn’t until 2 p.m. Having been awake for almost eight hours already, access to a delicious buffet breakfast was the perfect way to start the trip.

While waiting for our room to be ready, we were given full access to the hotel’s facilities, including the spa, pool, hot tub, bar, and restaurants. It was such a relaxing way to settle in after a long journey.
Rooms
Los Cauquenes features just 45 rooms and suites, ranging from cozy standard accommodations to senior suites offering stunning panoramic views over the Beagle Channel. I stayed in a regular room, which, while not overlooking the Beagle Channel, provided breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains behind the hotel.

My room had two twin beds and a large flat-screen television with cable TV (though no English-speaking channels), along with Disney+ and Netflix. A mini refrigerator was stocked with a few minibar items (beer, Coke, bottled water) that were available for an additional fee. There was also a tea and coffee cart equipped with a Nespresso machine (with four pods), a kettle, and a wide selection of teas.

The room offered ample storage space with a wardrobe that included a safe, as well as robes and slippers for use during the stay. Other amenities included a comfy chair with a footstool, a desk with multiple charging ports (including U.S. outlets—a relief after using adapters throughout South America), and blackout blinds. Speaking of the blinds, I recommend ensuring they are fully closed—especially since the sun rises around 4 a.m. I even used trouser hangers from the wardrobe to make sure the curtains stayed tightly closed (shout-out to TikTok for that tip!).
The beds were comfortable, and overall, the room felt thoughtfully designed for relaxation and convenience.
The bathroom was functional and well-equipped, featuring a shower, toilet, bidet, and a spacious vanity sink. Complimentary toiletries included shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shower caps, and a vanity kit. While the movable shower door didn’t always contain water within the bathtub, it wasn’t a significant issue.
One downside was that the room lacked a controllable thermostat. On colder days, this wasn’t a problem, but on warmer nights, the only way to cool the room was by opening the window.
Food and Drink
The property features one main restaurant and a wine bar, both offering stunning views over the Beagle Channel. Breakfast is served buffet-style from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and includes an extensive selection of hot and cold items, such as breads, pastries, cold meats, salads, and juices.

While I only dined at the restaurant for one dinner (I was keen to explore local eateries), the hotel’s free shuttle service into town made it incredibly easy to sample other options.

That said, the meal I had at the restaurant was exceptional. It began with a selection of breads accompanied by carrot butter. For the main course, I chose the Beagle Channel pie—a delicious take on fish pie made with sea bass. My friend ordered the sirloin steak, which she said was equally impressive.

To finish, we shared a chocolate mousse with raspberry filling that was absolutely to die for! While prices at the hotel restaurant were understandably higher than those in town, they were reasonable for a five-star establishment. True to Argentinian culture, the restaurant also boasted an extensive wine list, with bottles starting at around $30.

Facilities
The standout feature at Los Cauquenes is undoubtedly the spa, with its gorgeous indoor-outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, and a gym.

The property also houses a charming boutique shop selling souvenirs, postcards, hotel-branded items, and warm clothing—perfect if you’ve forgotten anything essential for your trip.
A complimentary shuttle service to and from the main town operates multiple times a day. The schedule is posted in reception, and no reservations are needed. Just arrive at reception five minutes before departure. The shuttle drops you off one block from the main street, making it incredibly convenient for exploring, dining, or joining local excursions.

During my visit, I fully enjoyed the spa facilities. While I didn’t book any treatments, I made good use of the jacuzzis and the indoor-outdoor pool. I was hoping for snow while soaking in the outdoor hot tub, but alas, my dream didn’t materialise. The spa also features a relaxation room with chilled, infused water, tea, and fresh fruit. To enhance the experience, guests are encouraged to disconnect from electronic devices.

The gym is well-equipped with weight machines, free weights, and cardio equipment (treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals), all with breathtaking views of the mountains and Beagle Channel. The spa also includes a sauna and showers/changing rooms, with fresh towels provided upon arrival. Spa facilities, the pool, and the gym are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Activities
The hotel offers a wide range of seasonal activities depending on when you visit. Keep in mind that summer in the southern hemisphere coincides with winter in the northern hemisphere, making December through February their peak season. Even in summer, temperatures can be quite cold—it was snowing on our first day in December!
Activities include Beagle Channel navigations, penguin-watching trips, 4×4 lake excursions, and various glacier and lake treks. Many activities require a minimum number of participants, but if this isn’t met, the concierge can book you with local operators such as Terramar, Canoeros, or Rumbo Sur.

I initially tried booking a Beagle Channel excursion through the hotel a week before arriving, but it was canceled. However, the concierge promptly arranged a penguin colony cruise with a local operator, and I was able to charge it directly to my room.
Service
The service at Los Cauquenes was exceptional throughout my stay. Even before my arrival, the hotel staff provided stellar communication via email, ensuring all my questions were answered.
Every staff member I encountered was friendly, eager to help, and always had a smile. Their excellent English was especially appreciated in a remote destination like Ushuaia, where it can sometimes be challenging to find English-speaking locals.

The day before checkout, I confirmed my complimentary airport transfer at the front desk and was informed I’d be picked up at 6:20 a.m.—two hours before my flight to Buenos Aires. Since we’d miss the regular breakfast service (which starts at 7:00 a.m.), the staff offered to prepare breakfast boxes for us to take to the airport. They even customised a gluten-free selection of sandwiches and baked goods for me without hesitation.

The night before departure, I also received a slip under my door confirming the airport pickup time, which was a thoughtful touch.
Closing Remarks
I had an exceptional stay at Los Cauquenes, and it’s truly hard to fault anything. From the delicious food and outstanding service to the serene spa and breathtaking views, everything was perfect. Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply a stopover on the way to Antarctica, this is hands down the best place to stay in Ushuaia. I would return in a heartbeat and highly recommend it to anyone visiting this stunning part of the world.
