Chile’s Most Unique Airbnb – Punta Quintay

I first discovered Punta Quintay a few years ago through a reel showing someone waking up to an unbelievable beachfront view. From that moment, I knew I had to visit, and 2024 was the year I finally made it happen. Spoiler alert: it exceeded all expectations. No wonder it made the list of most favourited Airbnbs globally in 2020. Located less than 90 minutes from Santiago, it’s an ideal addition to your Chilean itinerary or a perfect weekend getaway from the city.

Location and How to Get There

Punta Quintay is an easy drive from Santiago, following Route 68 for most of the journey. Eduardo, the incredible host, recommended renting a car—and I’m so glad we did. Not only was it more affordable than a taxi (approximately $250 round-trip), but it also gave us the flexibility to explore local gems like the charming seaside town of Quintay, which boasts a surprisingly vibrant food scene.

Once you’re near the Airbnb, you’ll find signs for @puntaquintay, making navigation straightforward. Eduardo also provided the caretaker Marcelo’s WhatsApp number, so he was ready to greet us when we arrived.

Unfortunately, our trip began with a detour. Route 68 was closed for a religious pilgrimage, but Eduardo promptly informed us and suggested an alternate route via Route 78. While it nearly doubled our travel time, we stocked up on snacks and drinks, and the journey flew by. Marcelo welcomed us upon arrival, showed us around, and ensured we were settled in for the night.

The Space

Punta Quintay is perfectly designed for two people. The open-plan studio features a California king bed as the centerpiece, a cosy L-shaped couch facing the beach, a small dining table, and a well-equipped kitchenette. The kitchen had everything we needed: a microwave, mini-fridge with a freezer compartment, kettle, toaster, blender, electric hot plates, dishwasher, and ample dishware. A fresh water dispenser was provided since the tap water isn’t potable, and Marcelo was just a call away to replace it when needed.

There’s a small honesty bar stocked with wine and sodas, binoculars, a Bluetooth speaker, and guides curated by Eduardo and Sofia with local recommendations.

The bathroom, though compact, was functional, with a hot water tank that heated surprisingly well. They even provided toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel.

The star attraction? The outdoor deck. With two deck chairs and a table perched over the cliff, it offers breathtaking views of Playa Grande and the shoreline below. The sound of crashing waves provides the ultimate relaxation soundtrack—no need for a white noise machine here!

Facilities

Beyond the kitchen, there’s an outdoor cooking area near the parking lot, complete with a barbecue grill, utensils, a table, and a refrigerator.

A private path leads down to the beach via a scenic staircase. Playa Grande is a long, flat stretch frequented by locals on weekends. It’s stunning and even has a small beachfront restaurant.

Activities

Quintay is a quaint seaside town with plenty to explore. We loved wandering through the artisan market, visiting the whaling museum, and dining at the many waterfront restaurants.

For diving enthusiasts, Quintay offers several dive companies that organiase tours. The area is home to vibrant marine life and colourful sponges thriving around sunken boats from the whaling era.

Valparaíso, with its colourful streets and vibrant culture, is just a 45-minute drive away. Eduardo also recommended a nearby winery offering tours with meals, though we couldn’t fit it into this trip. It’s now on our list for next time!

Customer Service

Eduardo’s communication was stellar, from answering my questions about car rentals to providing alternative routes when the main road was closed. His responsiveness and care made us feel like we were staying at a five-star hotel rather than an Airbnb.

Marcelo, the caretaker, was equally attentive, welcoming us late at night and ensuring we had everything we needed.

Closing Remarks

My high expectations for Punta Quintay were not only met but completely surpassed. The stunning views, thoughtful amenities, and incredible hospitality made this one of the best stays I’ve ever experienced. I’m already planning my return and even found myself researching real estate in the area—it’s that magical.

If you’re visiting Santiago, I can’t recommend adding Punta Quintay to your itinerary enough. You won’t regret it!
